WORKSHOP 1

Innovative Next-Generation Services through SIP, IMS and SOA

Since several years carriers have been promised very advanced solutions for them to be able to serve subscribers with innovative applications that they would be able to produce very quickly and that they would be able to deliver in a consistent way across fixed and mobile access. Today with protocols like SIP (Session Initiation protocol) and solutions such as IMS and SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) this is a reality. SIP is becoming center stage protocol for Multimedia Peer to Peer communication services. IMS and SOA/web services often presented as competing technologies are showing complementary capabilities viewed as a trigger point to spring board new communications-enabled applications into SMB, enterprise and residential markets. Real applications already generating revenues for carriers in these various segments will be described during the session.

Monetizing IP Services

Successful Next Generation operators are going through a fundamental change in their approach to customers. Success means being able to rapidly introduce new and personalized products, that are easier to use, easier to adopt, work the first time they are used, and above all guarantee a great user experience. Achieving this requires visibility and control of operational information in order to make the most of IT and network investments, and the ‘land grab’ of business and residential opportunity that is available today. David Jacobs will deliver an interactive session enabling you to benefit from our experience in helping our Tier 1 operator customers succeed.

David Jacobs – CTO & Co-Founder, Jacobs Rimell

11.45 - 12.25pm

WORKSHOP 4

From Products to Experience Networks: The New Basis for Value in the Age of Convergence

Deregulation, ubiquitous connectivity, and the convergence of multiple discreet technologies have opened up a new world of business opportunities. At the same time, managers are under overwhelming pressure to create value from these opportunities. In this evolving competitive space, increasing product variety seems to be the most common strategy for expanding markets, and protecting legacy business in the search for incremental value to the firm. However, for many consumers, product variety has not necessarily resulted in better customer experiences – or value to the firm. While connectivity and digitization have made creating product variety easier than ever before, competing effectively for value remains a challenge.

In this session we will explore leading-edge practices for value creation that stem from the design and delivery of valued experiences to a specific customer, at a specific time and place, in the context of specific events. Those practices are based on an intelligence framework that enables the firm to iteratively: adapt brand architecture to evolving business models; design and test value propositions that embody the brand; and monitor and optimize the customer’s experience vis-à-vis those value propositions.

Scott Radcliffe – Director Communications, Media & Entertainment Global Sales Development and Product Management, SAS Institute

WORKSHOP 5

Conundrums at the Carrier Level

It is no surprise to learn that carriers are constantly being challenged to provide blanket services at a regional or country level to meet regulatory demands, whilst at the same time needing to create unique granular service offerings to differentiate themselves to their target customer base. Both these challenges must be met whilst at the same time protecting the infrastructure that delivers these services. Providing a security platform capable of solving this triple dilemma is key to how carrier networks will need to evolve.

Where Next for Carrier Ethernet

In today’s competitive business environment, it is clear for Telco’s that staying inline with the market means enhancing their service offering to include IPTV, VoD and additional value add services. Moreover, as if entering into new domain of Video delivery wasn’t challenging enough for the Telco’s, Video distribution also undergo major evolution of its own. Video is becoming more personalized, HDTV is introduced, increasing the demand for capacity and new content services are introduced over the Internet adding to the turmoil.

Telco’s are debating the preferred path to proceed, a one that will minimize uncertainties and will be “build to last”, leading to increase ARPU and improved profitability.

Video Optimized Switching adds to the NGN the required intelligence in order to cost effectively deliver Video based services to the mass market in a profitable manner. It provides the inevitable linkage between the transport and video application layer and acts as the driving vehicle for fusing these layers in order to maximize revenues, addressable market, network resources, increase scalability, manageability and simultaneously enhancing the end user QoE.

This presentation will overview the market trends and perceived challenges in providing Video services to the mass markets, and further introduce the concept of Video Optimized Switching and how it serves to overcome the challenges with numerous mechanisms and innovative approach.

Enterprise Fixed-Mobile Convergence: Keeping the Mobile Operator in the Equation

Mobile operators risk being cut out of the FMC equation because of the gap between what enterprises want and what operators are providing. Large enterprises turn to FMC to bring order to the chaotic mix of landline and mobile, where the use of mobile phones is beyond the control of the enterprise’s IT and telecom departments. They want FMC to help them increase productivity, improve management, and control costs. To keep corporate customers from moving to enterprise-centric solutions and losing revenue opportunities, mobile operators must offer an FMC solution that truly addresses enterprise needs. This session will explore the various FMC alternative approaches and focus on those that enable mobile operators to remain part of the solution, how these mobile operators can generate incremental revenues from FMC and how to handle the complexity of servicing enterprises.

WORKSHOP 13

Telecom Web Services in Enabling Telcos to Exploit the Unique Assets in Their Networks

Telcos are now facing serious competition from internet-based service providers such as Google and Yahoo (the Webcos), and device/portal players such as Apple and Nokia are taking an ever-increasing wallet share of consumer spending on communications & content. At the same time, Social Networking players such as Facebook and MySpace are collecting massive amounts of valuable data about their customers, information that has traditionally been seen as one of the key Telco assets.

In this environment, the key question facing Telcos today is should they continue to fight these trends and compete with the new entrants, or embrace this new era and collaborate with them? Aepona’s view is that they can rise to the challenge by “opening up” their networks, driving innovation and enabling independent developers to build and roll out new applications and features to run over them – quickly and easily.

This workshop session will examine the role of of Telecom Web Services in enabling Telcos to exploit the unique assets in their networks - reliable communications, information and intelligence - that can be embedded in new services, and therefore monetised. The key to this is making these assets available to 3rd party web developers, service providers and Enterprise/IT developers as standard-based Web Services - the language of the Internet that every developer in the world understands. As a result, they can stake a claim in the burgeoning space for the highly targeted, quirky and niche applications that characterise the Web 2.0 phenomenon, as well as allowing them to develop closer, more profitable relationships with Enterprise customers by “Telco-enabling” their existing business processes.

The Convergence of the Digital Home – Residential Gateways Role

Operators are struggling to increase their average revenue per user (ARPU) and to expand their customer base, by offering advanced services over their existing infrastructure. These value added services (VAS) involve different home devices, such as TV, home-storage and printer, comprising the evolving digital home.

Nevertheless, generating revenues from such services requires the operator to take a managing position over the home network, elevating them from plain over-the-top Internet services.

Visibility to 100% of the incoming, outgoing and transit traffic; overseeing all home devices; being capable of massaging and controlling this environment.
